Is Consumate Man Lower than the Angels?

Posted by

Members of the body of Christ argue over this topic because we fail to truly divide the word–precepts upon precepts. Many believers/saints believe that Angels are made above them because of Psalm 8:5 and Hebrews 2:5-7, but I have come to present the facts and hopefully you can judge for yourself. Indeed, “nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad” [Luke 18:17] This should help someone understand their nature better.

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.” Psalm 8:5

The Hebrew word used for “angels” in Psalm 8:5 is Elohim. So this verse is actually saying that “God has made man a little lower than He” [author paraphrase]. This verse is later quoted in Hebrews  2:9:

For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands.

Because the term “messengers” was used in the new testament instead of Elohim as originally used, I present the following to you: If you read vs 9 of that chapter (Hebrews 2) you will understand that this verse is still saying that Man is made a little lower than Elohim, not the angels. Because vs. 9 says Jesus was made a little lower than the angels, we must consider the context of that verse and also the whole chapter. Jesus Christ was the fullness of the Godhead bodily and yet we see vs 9 saying that He was made lower than the angels. To understand this, we must see Jesus as “fully man and yet fully God”. Now, man in human body (suffers death in the body) speaks of humanity (which is lower than the angels). The angels do not have this body that we live in. But man possessing or being possessed by divinity (the Spirit of God), that is “consummate man” is not lower than the angels. However, man without salvation is definitely lower than the angels.

The Son Made Lower than Angels?

Some bible translations have the above (the son made lower than angels) as the title this section of the chapter but …the son was never made lower than the angels.

Servants & Co-Servants of God

Servants of God are basically those who serve God with their life. The angels are servants of God and we are also servants of God because we are not just sons but we serve Him with our life. The assignment & methods of fulfillment the assignment may be different but we and the angels both serve God. A son who disobeys his Father or refuses to serve and honor his father is not a son, it is indeed a shame. Jesus Christ knew He was a son while in the earth realm yet He served the Father with everything that He was. Hence, sons of God serve, they are are co-servants to God; however the sons still has a place in the kingdom of God that the “angels” do not have…because the sons of God are also co-heirs to God. Indeed, it is a privilege to be a servant of God…even as a son. The following verses help explain this simple truth:
“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,…” [Rom. 1:1] “For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant.” [1 Cor. 7:22]
Angels were never referred to as “sons of God”in God’s word…however, if we consider Revelations 22:9, we can say that angels are fellow servants with us.
And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God (Revelation 22:8-9)

Messengers of God

The  angels are referred to as ministering spirits. The Greek word used for “angel” is “messenger” so angels are actually God’s messengers. If you then flip the script, we will see that the sons of God are also messengers of God. God has sent us here to do His work. So the son is a messenger, too – sent to serve. Just like the ministering spirits, Jesus Christ, the son of God also came to serve.
Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister (serve), and to give his life a ransom for many. Matthew 20:28
At this stage, we can simply say that man, that is the son, is also a servant and a messenger of God; and based on Revelation 22:9, we can safely say that angels are co-workers or co-laborers with the sons; however, it is imperative to know if consummate man was made above the angels. Is The Son Made Lower than the Angels? No, the Son is not made lower than the Angels. Jesus is the son of God & the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Now if we be heirs of God, joint heirs with Christ Jesus (Romans 8:17), then we are sons–even as the Father has called us. As sons, we are above the angels.
“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.” Romans 8:17

Notice Romans 8:17 uses the condition “if”. If you are God’s child, then heirs, heirs of God and join-heirs with Christ. …AGAIN “if” …it be that we suffer with Christ. This clearly tells us that you cannot just claim to be a son of God. A man without the Spirit of God, without the spirit of adoption [Romans 8:15] is not a son. You are a son if you are joined together with Christ in God. So the question that is being answered here is that the son is made above the angels. If you are a son of God, co-heir with Christ,  you were made above the angels; but you are still a co-servant or messenger with the angels. This is not for you to think highly of yourself. Matter of fact, you should be humbled to know how important you are to God. This has everything to do with “knowing who you are”, your “identity” in Christ–even in this realm. Know who you are!!
